Bicycle recommendation?
I'd really like to buy myself a bike so that I can ride with my son. It'd be good exercise and quality time that I can spend with my boy. Problem is that I'm still 385 or so. Anyone know of any bikes that'll be strong enough to handle my big ass? Most of the ones that I've seen have weight limits around 250lbs...

Hey Matt
I was there once too .
I started off at 350 lbs .
I have lost 125 lbs and did most of that by riding .
You might check out a brand called a towne they make all kinds of bkes .There bike called the electra would be a good choice for a guy how is just starting off in the cycling game .
I ride to work and back eight miles one way , but there is an 468 ft climb in elev .going .
The ride home is really nice as I work second shift and get off at 330 am ( nobody on the road at time )

Hey Matt,
Check out the Giant Sedona @ www.giant-bicycles.com . I bought this when I was about 350 lbs. based on the recommendation of a local bike dealer. Very stong frame & rims. You can get disc brakes for extra braking power. The gear selectors & brakes are nciely laid out out. It retails for about $425.00. I never had a problem wth mine. Good luck & have fun with your son--he'll love it.

Good question, thanks so far to everyone who's posted recommendations. My wife and I are looking, too. I'm down to where I feel like I might be able to get started on riding again. Especially once all the crap is fixed with my leg. My problem is, I like to ride a bit crazy, so I need to get something I can beat on. My wife is a bit more conservative and likes to ride long distances. It'll be fun no matter what we do. Any more suggestions?
Hi Matt,
I started riding post WLS when I was around 425 or so. Took me a couple of tries to work up the courage to balance myself as I coasted down our hill. Once I got down, I turned around and could only pedal a couple of times before I was winded. Seems so long ago now.
Anywho, I wouldn't recommend buying a nice bike until you are down to 250 or so. I rode my old steel Univega which I fixed up a week after WLS. Got a nice comfy seat, new tires, brakes, etc. You can find a nice steel bike for $50 or so pretty much any weekend at a garage sale. You don't want to start out on a junker but a nice 1990's steel bike (mountain or road) is a good place to start. Most any brand will do.
Once you get the passion for cycling and lose the weight, that's when you really want to do the research and buy a super nice bike. A lot of the new frames are so light weight, the extra load will stress them and possibly break. So, stick with a good old reliable steel frame for the time being.
Best of luck.
